As you may have read in other articles, "nakationing" is naked vacationing. It is becoming more popular as the nudist industry grows and manufacturers, service providers, and travel professionals set their sights on nudists' dollars. More is being offered (lines of "wraps" and other clothing, which seems oxymoronic to me...) and less is absolutely necessary. However, whether you nakation in your own backyard, on a luxury cruise to Europe or Alaska, or visit one of the many resorts with nudist facilities or beaches, there are certain things that you simply must have for your comfort and safety.
#1. Sunscreen. Lots of sunscreen. Remember, there may be parts of you that haven't seen the light of day (literally) since you pulled away from Mom and ran with abandon across the front lawn. You should use a lotion with no less than 30 SPF, higher when you first begin. Consider investing in sunscreen for your lips (in a tube like Chapstik) which you can also use on places like your nose and eye lids. Apply it heavily and often and don't forget to wash it off before jumping in the pool!
#2. A hat or sun visor. Check into the offerings at your local sporting store carefully. Many manufacturers now make baseball caps or wide, stiff-brimmed hats that feature pockets for carrying keys, change, etc. Tilley Airflow and Tuck-Away caps are two such models. While it is, at times, necessary to keep the sun off of your face or out of your eyes, if you can satisfy two objectives with just one piece of clothing, all the better!
#3. Towels. You'll actually only NEED one towel, but it is far more convenient to use two - one hand-towel sized on which to sit as you move from place to place, and one beach size on which to lay on the beach or in a chaise lounge near the pool. Many nudists have towels with their names on them or distinctive colors identifying them as their own.
#4. Water. While it's tempting to fill your Thermos with soda, coffee, or an alcoholic libation, plain ol' water will serve you better. Alcohol is dehydrating and so is the sun. Combine the two and you (and your kidneys) can end up in trouble. Also, alcohol has a somewhat detrimental effect on your judgment. When you're already sun soaked, it's a good idea to be able to know when to say enough has been enough. The calories in soda will make you feel unrealistically full and you may not eat when you should. Combine that with a great deal of sunshine and a whopper of a headache may be your payoff. Coffee (or any hot beverage for that matter) won't provide the degree of refreshment that you're looking for after you've been playing (or laying) in the sun. Stick with water - iced if possible - and plenty of it.
While I realize that most articles offer "Top Ten" lists, there are so few things you need to take on a nakation that this list is considerably (and happily) shorter. The items above are the necessities. If you are extending your day trip overnight, you will, of course, need most of the things you'd need anywhere else: toothbrush, shampoo, etc. It's also a nice idea to carry a book (I'm an English teacher. I HAVE to recommend that you always have a book with you!) or a deck of cards, but remember - that's one more thing that you have to carry. A great deal of the charm of being a nudist is the feeling of being so unencumbered. You don't need to be concerned about where you've put your purse or what to pack or how many bags you'll need. Just put some cash in your hat, grab your towels and your drink bottle and GO!
