Last Thursday, October 15, RUMBAR at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne hosted the final stage of the first Ron Abuelo & Rum Jumbie Mixology Contest. Eight of Miami’s top mixologists competed for a chance to win a trip to Panama, courtesy of Varela Hermanos and Varela Imports.

The contest gathered the ‘crème de la crème’ of Miami’s Bar Chefs, who were tested and challenged by an impressive panel of judges. Hosted at RUMBAR, the sultry vintage-Havana inspired lounge at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, the event showcased the exceptional talent and creativity of the contestants, who represented some of Miami’s trendiest venues: The Florida Room at The Delano Hotel, The Skybar at The Shore Club, the lounges at The new Mondrian, The Mandarin Oriental, The Victor Hotel and more.

The winner of the contest, Gabriel Orta, concocted two exceptional libations, using premium dark Panamanian rum, Ron Abuelo Añejo, and St. Maarten’s emblematic flavored rum, Rum Jumbie Splash. A talented Bar Chef, Gabriel is also an accomplished entrepreneur. He founded Bar Lab, a cocktail consulting business, with partner Elad Zvi and his work in molecular mixology can be seen in action and on the menu at local hotspot The Florida Room, located in the Delano Hotel in Miami’s South Beach.

Gabriel will fly down to Panama City early next year to discover the Varela Hermanos distillery in Pese and explore the booming country of Panama. Rumor has it that the winner of the New York Mixology Contest, Paolo Votano, will join him for an ultimate face-off in Panama City, in order to decide who will earn the title of Top Rum Mixologist by Varela Imports.
