Immediately preceding the November 5 closing-night gala for AFI Fest 2009, fashion designer Tom Ford’s directorial debut – A Single Man – screened at Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. The occasion marked the film’s U.S. debut, and it is due in theaters on December 11.
The Weinstein Company, which picked the movie up for distribution in the United States and Germany after its September screening at the Toronto Film Festival, plans an initial limited run so the film will qualify for the 82nd Academy Awards to be followed by a wide release in early 2010.
Ford wrote the screenplay based on a Christopher Isherwood novel, and the movie stars Colin Firth who walked away with the Venice Film Festival’s best actor award for his work. It also features Julianne Moore (a likely best supporting actress Oscar contender), Ginnifer Goodwin, Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult.
A Single Man is a story of love interrupted and unfolds over a single day in Los Angeles in 1962. George Falconer (Firth) is a 52-year old gay British professor who struggles to find meaning after the recent death of his long-time partner (Goode). He is consoled by his closest friend Charley (Moore) and stalked by a young student Kenny (Hoult). The production design team that won awards for their work on Mad Men, also set in the 1960s, was engaged for the film’s production. The movie was filmed in Los Angeles and Pasadena, California.
The trailer below, the first for the film, was released on November 6, 2009.
