Take the kids to "Pinkalicious the Musical" for some holiday fun

There are still plenty of theatrical productions to see during the holiday season, far from Broadway’s steep ticket prices and crowds. Here are a half-dozen lesser known kids’ shows that will make the holidays special without burning a hole in your pocket.

This is a new production of Dylan Thomas's childhood reminiscence, featuring traditional and original music. It’s being shown at the Irish Repertory Theatre, 132 West 22nd Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). Performances are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm; and 3 p.m. matinees are held on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $55-$60 for adults, and $20 for children under 16. Call the box office at 212-727-2737. This show closes on Jan. 4.

This is an adventure story from the North Pole, told by the entertaining Dan Kitrosser and featuring music, costumes and audience interaction. Usually surrounded by his best friend The Snow, Blizzard the Wizard embarks on a search for his friend who goes missing one winter. Blizzard the Wizard is a funny, environmentally conscious show. You can see it at Urban Stages, 259 West 30th Street, through Jan. 18.
 
This is a revival of the musical by Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler about a 13-year-old girl, Edwina Spoonapple, who wants to be an advice columnist. Edwina decides that she and her pals will do just that. The show features endearing music and advice on kiddy issues ranging from what to do when offered food you hate to dealing with a truly annoying brother. The show is on at the DR2 Kids Theatre, 103 E. 15th St.Tickets are $29.50 through $39.50, and can be ordered through Telecharge at 1-800-432-7250 or 212-239-6200, or online at telecharge.com. Dear Edwina closes on Jan. 25.

Vital Children's Theatre presents a musical about a girl who can't stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. This lands her at the doctor's office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe. Pinkalicious is at the Bleeker Street Theater, 45 Bleeker St. (at Lafayette). All tickets are $29.50, and can be purchased online at telecharge.com or by calling (212) 239-6200. The show takes place every Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. through April 26th.

n original Hannukah play written and directed by Edward Einhorn, in which a contemporary boy meets the historical Judah Maccabee. The play features shadow puppets among its storytelling techniques, and is told in eight scenes, corresponding to the eight days of Hannukah. The play examines the concepts of ancient and modern perspectives on war and religion, but is also a celebration of perseverance during difficult times. It is filled with music and humor that transcends difficult circumstances. Playing Dreidel is at the Looking Glass Theatre, 422 W. 57th St (between 9th & 10th Ave.), with performances on Sundays at 2 p.m. through Dec. 28th. The Tortoise and the Hare's Holiday Hoop-LA!

The Tortoise and the Hare's Holiday Hoop-LA! is a new Off -Broadway holiday musical-comedy about friendship, teamwork and holiday spirit presented by The Limecat Family Theatre Company. The show includes a colorful supporting cast of animal friends, snowflakes, dancing matzah-balls, and hum-bugs, and the two main characters, Terri Tortoise and Harry Hare. The Tortoise and the Hare is playing at St. Luke's Theatre at 308 West 46th Street. Performances are Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 and 4 p.m. Tickets are available for $20 and $40 through telecharge.com or by calling 212-239-6200. The show closes Jan. 4.
