In New York City, it's never too early to get your tickets to various versions of "The Nutcracker Suite," a perennial favorite for families during the holidays.
One of the favorites among New Yorkers is, of course, the New York City Ballet's interpretation, George Balanchine's version of "The Nutcracker Suite." This version is known, of course, for its beautiful cast and equally breathtaking set that includes a huge, one-ton Christmas tree.
The New York City Ballet version runs from Nov. 28 through Jan. 3, 2009. You can check the NYCB website for specific ticket prices and dates, but tickets generally range from $210 for "Sweet Seats" on prime dates all the way down to standing-room seats for $10.
Make tracks for the Urban Ballet Theater's version, "Nutcracker in the Lower," a version set on the Lower East Side of New York and featuring an array of dance that includes flamenco, hip-hop, African and Chinese. The dancing takes place beginning Nov. 29 and ending on Dec. 6 at the Abrons Arts Center, at 466 Grand Street, near Pitt Street. You can find showtimes and tickets at Theatermania or by calling 212-352-3101.
Once again, the great Moscow Ballet is doing a nationwide U.S. tour with its version of The Nutcracker throughout the holidays. Its one-time-only appearance in New York will take place onSunday, Dec. 28, at 3 p.m. at the Colden Auditorium at Queens College in Flushing. You can charge tickets by phone at 718-793-8080 or online at the Kupferberg Center website.
For the 13th year in a row, the Dances Patrelle will present Francis Patrelle's unique rendition of Tchaikovsky's holiday classic, this one called "The Yorkville Nutcracker." This version is set in 1895, and in some of New York's most beloved landmarks, including Gracie Mansion, Central Park and the Bronx Botanical Garden. The Yorkville Nutcracker takes place at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, 695 Park Ave., at 68th St. Tickets range from $40 to $85 and can be purchase by calling 212-772-4448.
