See New York City's holiday windows
One of my favorite holiday things to do in New York City is to visit the famous department store windows that are decorated for the holidays – complete with animated scenes, breathtaking designs and old-fashioned creativity and whimsy that enchant visitors year after year.
Although some of the famous department stores still have wraps on their plans for decorating their windows, a few of the top names have announced their themes for the holidays in 2008. Generally, stores unveil their holiday windows in mid-November or directly following Thanksgiving.
Saks Fifth Avenue
The famous Saks Fifth Avenue store, which has one of the most popular window displays because of the its location directly across Fifth Avenue from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, has announced that it has partnered with Swarovski Elements to create its holiday windows and decor for the 2008 holiday season. The windows will feature one-of-a-kind, “crystallized” creations from designers including Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen, Missoni, Isaac Mizrahi, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Carolina Herrera, and Michael Kors. The Saks windows will be unveiled, along with the famous Fifth Avenue Snowflake, on Monday, Nov. 24, just before Thanksgiving. Saks is located at 611 Fifth Avenue, at 50th Street.
Bloomingdales
While the wraps are still on the Bloomingdales theme for its holiday windows, expect something extraordinary – and Tony Bennett. On Nov. 20, the Grammy award-winning Bennett will unveil Bloomingdale's holiday windows on Lexington Avenue and 59th Street. He’ll be performing a selection of holiday tunes from his new album, “Tony Bennett: a Swingin’ Christmas.” Also performing will be the children’s choir from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, the New York City public arts high school that Bennett founded. Bennett also created an original watercolor of the Bloomingdale's marquee, which will be reproduced on the store's holiday shopping bag and a special electronic gift card.
Lord & Taylor
Lord & Taylor’s windows will be unveiled on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m., accompanied by music from the Broadway cast of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” and the children’s choir from The Langston Hughes Young Explorers Academy. This year’s Lord & Taylor windows are being dedicated to The Fund for Public Schools. You can find Lord & Taylor at 424 Fifth Avenue, and 39th Street.
Macy’s You can always count on the grand dame of New York City department stores to pull out all the stops on its holiday windows display. The windows will be unveiled, as always, immediately following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. While the store is still mum about its windows display, here’s a possible theory. Consider the fact that Macy's is launching a massive holiday advertising campaign, called “Believe,” that is focused on young Virginia O’Hanlon’s now famous letter to the New York Sun, asking if there really is a Santa Claus. Macy’s is located at Herald Square, Broadway between 34th and 35th Streets.
Barney’s New York
No word yet on when these windows will be unveiled, but the store at 660 Madison Avenue (at 61st Street) can be counted on to present irreverent and funky windows with a holiday theme. One year Barney’s had an Andy Warhol theme and last year’s windows were eco-friendly.
Bergdorf Goodman
The chic Bergdorf Goodman store, located just around the corner from Barney’s, at 754 Fifth Avenue and 58th Street, are usually unveiled right after Thanksgiving. Expect more traditional themes from Bergdorf and lots of bling.
