Taking the DIY aesthetic to uncharted, heavier heights is Roxboro, North Carolina quintet Steryle. The band's sound is an amalgamation of everything that makes metal beastly; rapid riffs? Machine gun-esque drumming? Growled vocals that some might refer to as evil incarnate? Check, check and check. But the guys in Steryle incorporate plenty of diverse influences into their sound to create something a little less conventional and a lot more interesting. Between the massive breakdowns the band sprinkles in undeniably catchy dual harmonics and slower, more deliberate structures (take a listen to "The Reflection" on the band's myspace page to get an idea).
There's no denying the talent of vocalist David Scoles; his growls are often interspersed with impressive (and unexpected upon initial listen) clean singing parts that are deceptively hook-laden and, like the aforementioned more straightforward structures, add a much-needed dose of melody between all the pounding noise. Guitarist Daniel Adams and bassist Brandon Edwards add intervallic backing shrieks to complete a dynamic vocal approach that's difficult for a lot of metal bands to pull off without being pigeonholed as 'screamo', a misnomer if there ever was one. Nope, there's nary a swoosh haircut or pair of skinny jeans to be found amongst the guys in Sterlye; just a ton of heart and a huge middle finger to all the pretenders out there.
The band's new self-released CD Foreshadowing Yesterday was produced by Jamie King, who's worked with bands such as Between the Buried and Me and The Classic Struggle. King knows how to make bands achieve optimum heaviness, and that tradition fortunately continues with this record.
The band is currently touring the east coast in support of Foreshadowing Yesterday, and will be playing three shows in the Orlando area this week: one at The Haven, located at 6700 Aloma Avenue in Winter Park this Thursday, followed by a two-night engagement at The Dungeon, located at 6440 N. Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando on Friday and Saturday. And yes, Saturday may be July 4, but what better way to display your independence than by attending what should be an awesome metal show? If we don't headbang, the terrorists win.
