If you don't know who Loni Love is, then you haven't been watching E!s Chelsea Lately, VH1's I Love The 70s, 80s, 90s, or The New Millennium. "People still come up to me and quote what I said" stated the Detroit-born comedian-actress, who returns to Michigan on November 6 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre as part of the Comedians of Chelsea Lately Tour with fellow stand-up comics including Heather McDonald, Sarah Colonna, John Caparulo, and CHUY. "You get a little bit of everything" she continued. "Detroit is made up of different people who want to give back. It has always been a tough city, and it can bounce back from anything. I hope that people come to the show, forget their worries, laugh and have a great time."
Loni's dreams of making people laugh is similar to Jennifer Beals' character in 1983's Flashdance. The difference, though, is that Loni was an engineer during the day and comedian by night. She was born the latchkey daughter of a hardworking mother in Detroit's Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects, where she began working on the GM assembly line during high school, which led to an electrical engineering scholarship to Prairie View A&M Univerity Texas, and marked the beginning of Loni's career. Besides the fact that there was a shortage of female comedians back then, she spent the next eight years as both engineer and comic, paying her dues and developing her material.
"I think engineering is funny, so I decided to do stand-up comedy to save America from my bad work. Engineers have a sense of humor. When you started comedy, it's hard" Loni stated. "I'm not the regular urban comic; I tend to be mainstream and talk about real situations. When you go to a Loni Love show, you hear the truth."
Recently, due to the Kwame Kilpatrick scandal and the Great Recession, the Motor City has been getting bad press with stories of police and political corruption, bankruptcy of the automotive Big 3, education cuts, school closings, and near cuts of the D-DOT weekend bus service. Still, according to Loni, "Detroit is the city that kept America running, and America has to remember that it needs this city to keep running."
Running but not on empty, Loni was fortunate enough to be one of the first African-Americans to cover the groundbreaking Presidential inauguration of Barack Obama. "D.C. was bombarded. It was really a great experience. Everything is changing, our government is changing, and we have to go along with it" Loni continued.
Besides her duties on E!'s Chelsea Lately and TruTV's The Smoking Gun, Loni continues to remain in demand. She is currently taping a special for Comedy Central airing next year, and will be a special comedic correspondent for Dr. Oz's daytime talk show. "Entertaining people is what I’ve always wanted to do," Loni humbled, "I'm very blessed."
