Throughout the country on average, AM/FM stations run between 10-16 minutes of commercials per hour. This means that radio stations play about 4 hours worth of commercials each and every day. There are many reasons for the drastic number of music breaks heard throughout the country.
Some would say that the poor economic spiral we are currently in is causing radio stations to sell more advertising space over their airwaves. This seems reasonable due to the fact that just about everyone in this country is feeling the effects of the declining economy.
Other people will tell you that it is the rise in popularity of satellite radio. Satellite radio (
XM,
Sirius, etc.) offers stations

which are both commercial free and filled with variety. They also offer shows like Howard Stern, which can no longer be heard on terrestrial radio. With the amount of material satellite radio has at their disposal, it is almost impossible for AM/FM stations to hold their own.
One thing that many people can agree on is that AM/FM companies are facing many financial hardships. It seems that there may be even a bigger rise in commercials over the next couple of years just to make sure their companies can finish on the plus side of things. However, increasing commercial play more than now may force people to jump on the satellite radio bandwagon. If that were to happen, AM/FM radio may begin to be obsolete.
