Did video kill the radio star?
In 1979 The Buggles released the song “Video Killed the Radio Star”, which became the first video
MTV ever showed in North America and also a rallying anthem for the start up station. Soon after this many artists began recording videos along with their songs. As
MTV gained popularity it seemed as though radio could be a fading trend. So how is the state of radio now?
For several years throughout the 80’s and 90’s
MTV held a strong hold on the music scene, bringing young viewers in and exposing them to video images of their favorite artists. As years began to pass
MTV began to look for new and exciting ways to lure viewers in. This meant the end of actual music on the station. Today you’ll be hard pressed to find a music video on the station during a normal time of day. Instead
MTV creates and airs their own shows (from the Real World to Parental Control). Even TRL was done away with when numbers began to dwindle.
Through all the lean years of music on the radio, they have never changed their format. Good music will always bring people in; somewhere along the line
MTV forgot this. Thirty years after the Buggles uttered those 5 words, the trend of music videos has all but decayed. Only time will tell if radio has killed the video star.
