Part 3 of the Examiner interview with mystery writer and social media consultant, Margy Rydzynski (www.maggie-della.com), concludes with advice for aspiring writers.
What advice would you offer anyone interested in writing fiction, and mystery fiction, in particular?
If you want to write, you have to read. Not only that, but read critically. I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy what you read, but when you're finished with the book, give it some thought. How did the writing appeal to you? Then ask yourself how you would tell this story.
Some mystery writers are very formulaic; others use the initial mystery to launch a totally different type of "investigation." I'm in the latter category. A good mystery is like a good magic act. You aren't supposed to see the next thing coming. You're surprised at the way the situation is presented and manipulated. The audience is waiting to be surprised.
Are there any publications or web sites you'd recommend to beginning writers?
For writing and reviewing, I’d suggest http://editred.com and http://www.gather.com. For general writing, of course, there’s www.writersdigest.com.
