
Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo today threw his support behind Brooklyn City Council Member Bill de Blasio in his bid for New York City Public Advocate.
“I am pleased and proud to endorse Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate," said Cuomo at a City Hall press conference Wednesday morning. "The last time I endorsed Bill was when he was a candidate for City Council in 2001. I was right then and I’m right now. Bill de Blasio has a proven record of making government more responsive and responsible"
Cuomo joins more than 100 individuals to have endorsed Cuomo in the hotly contested Democratic Primary for public advocate.
“I am incredibly honored to have the support of Mario Cuomo, one of the greatest Governors in New York’s history," said de Blasio. "Governor Cuomo has always had an unprecedented commitment to raising the level of public discourse and creating a vibrant democratic debate around key issues. I believe the fundamental responsibility of the Public Advocate is to make City government more democratic, transparent and accountable, and that’s exactly what I intend to do,”
De Blasio is running against City Council Member Eric Gioia, former New York City Public Advocate Mark Green and civil liberties attorney Norman Siegel for the Democratic Party's nomination for Public Advocate in the September 15 Primary.
The candidate who gets at least 40 percent of the vote will face off against Republican candidate Alex Zablocki in the November Election..
Mario Cuomo's son, State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo will not be endorsing in the Primary.
