Thousands of people packed the streets of lower Manhattan this morning to try to get even a glimpse of the World Champion New York Yankees Friday.
Streets were jammed for more than a mile on both sides of the street along Broadway, the crowd completely blocking the sidewalk and streching a full block back to West Broadway. People struggled to even get a glimpse of their favorite players.
"Oh my god!," screamed one woman "I just saw Derek Jeter. This is so awesome!"
Following the ticker tape parade, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg hosted a lunch for the team and their families, followed by a ceremony where he presented every member of the Yankees organization with a "Key to the City." Bloomberg referred to receiving such a key as "the highest honor" bestowed by the city.
"the key symbolizes that no matter what you do, where you go, New York City is alwas your home," said Bloomberg. You're always welcome here."
250 lucky people each won two VIP tickets to today's event, while thousands of others gathered just outside City Hal to watch the ceremony on a jumbotron. More than 37,000 people entered the lottery for tickets, which took place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon.
Team manager Joe Girardi insisted on wearing number 27 throughout this season, highlighting the team's goal of winning their 27th World Series, which they succeeded in doing late Wednesday night. He's now retiring that number and will wear number 28.
This is the first ticker tape parade for the team since 2000.
