During a two hour period this afternoon more than 37,000 people called or went online to request a pair of the 500 VIP tickets to tomorrow's ceremony at City Hall honoring The New York Yankees victory in the 2009 World Series, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced this afternoon.
“We’ve prided ourselves on always keeping the doors of city government open to everyone," said Bloomberg. "City Hall Plaza belongs to the people, and I could not be happier so many people wanted to be a part of the ceremony. The lucky winners are going to have the opportunity be a part of a special New York City moment with the new World Champions.”
The ceremony, where Bloomberg will present the Yankees with "Keys to the City" will follow the ticker-tape parade up the Canyon of Heroes. The sidewalk along the parade route will be open to the public. Due to space limitations only those with VIP tickets will be able to enter the City Hall grounds to watch the ceremony, but the city will set up a large screen near City Hall Park so that everyone can view the ceremony. Winners have been notified by phone and E-mail and will pick up their tickets tomorrow morning.
The last ticker tape parade was held on February 5, 2008 honoring the New York Giants Super Bowl victory. That parade produced 36.5 tons of paper, which seems small compared to the 46.7 tons generated in October of 2000, the last time The Yankees won a World Series.
