New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg narrowly defeated Democratic rival William C. Thompson to win a third term as mayor Tuesday.

In a close race, Bloomberg narrowly defeated Thompson with 51 percent of the vote to Thompson's 45 percent.  After a year-long campaign  in which Bloomberg spent a record 100 million dollars the mayor joined an elite group of three former mayors, Fiorello LaGuaurdia, Robert Wagner and Ed Koch.

Koch, who was present at tonight's victory party proudly welcomed Bloomberg to the club.

Bloomberg touted his record of independence and progress, using

"Tonight throughout  the nation the public has been very clear," said Bloomberg.  "And some incumbents have leaned thet they are tired of politics as usual and they want leaders from both sides who get things done."

That comment was a clear reference to Democratic Governor Jon Corzine's loss in New Jersey to Republican challenger Chris Christie, as well as loss by Democrats in the Virgina Governor's race and races that are too close to call in Nassau County.

But questions remain about the campaign, which had been polling 17 points ahead of Thompson a week ago, but managed only a five percent victory.

"Tonight is a time to celebrate," said Bloomberg, "but tomorrow I can assure you that I'll be back at work bright and early."

Bloomberg's public schedule shows an 8 a.m. meeting in Brooklyn followed by a 9:15 a.m. meeting with senior staff..
