Following the MTA Board's approval of the "doomsday budget" plan, which could result in bus and subway fare increases as high a 23 percent last week, the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign sent out the following message:

Dear Rider,

Last week, the MTA voted to proceed with their doomsday budget plan. This means we'll soon be facing severe fare hikes and devastating service cuts...unless our decision-makers take action. Only Governor Paterson and the state legislature can stop them.

The MTA's story has been in all the papers: 23% fare hikes. 5 subway lines eliminated or shortened. 25 bus routes eliminated. Zero money for new service our growing city needs.

The Straphangers Campaign and the Campaign for New York's future urges you to send a letter to the editor to a newspaper with your story, telling how the fare hike and service cuts affect you.

Send your story to the local papers today, giving your personal reasons why we need a plan for full, fair, reliable transit funding.

Keep New York moving!

Send me your own stories and comments and I'll publish the best ones!
