Attorney, First Lady, Senator and Democratic presidential candidate; come Monday, the impressive political resume of New York's junior senator is about to get even more impressive, as Hillary Rodham Clinton can add "Secretary of State-designee."
Informed sources moments ago told The Examiner that President-elect Barack Obama will formally nominate Clinton for the nation's top diplomatic post in Chicago Monday morning and that the senator will accept.
Clinton will keep the title of "Secretary of State-designee," until such time as the Senate confirms Obama's appointment, a matter that the body legally can't take up until after Obama is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States on January 20th. Her confirmation is expected to pass overwhelmingly, particularly given that the 111th Congress, which will convene on January 3rd will have at least 58, possibly as many as 60 Democratic Senators.
It was not immediately clear Saturday night whether Clinton would wait until after her confirmation to resign her Senate seat.
Once Clinton tenders her resignation, New York Governor David A. Paterson, a Democrat will appoint a replacement who will take office immediately, then face a special election in 2010 and re-election in 2012, when Clinton's term was set to expire.
I want to hear your thoughts on who you think Paterson should appoint to replace Clinton in the Senate. E-mail me at comments@government.examinerny.com.
