A really cool tattoo of a guy blowing
his brains out with a shotgun on the
arm of really smart and mature NBA
player, Marquis Daniels, who, by the
way, isn't looking for attention.

Apparently I've hit a nerve.  After posting my recent column about not liking most of the NBA covered in tattoos, I've received hate mail and several hate phone calls.  Also, from a one inch by one inch photo on my columns, people who think I'm being superficial because I don't like tattoos, are able to surmise that I'm middle-aged, balding, grumpy and out of touch with today's cool crowd.

For the record, I'm 41, so I'm very much middle-aged.  I am not, however, balding (I have plenty of graying hair) or grumpy.  Out of touch?  If you have to like cheesy blue art on body parts to be in, then count me out.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pushing for legislation to outlaw tattoos.  I couldn't honestly care less what someone does to their body.  I just want to make it clear how dumb it looks, that's all.

I find it interesting that the three groups of people who are most associated with tattoos, convicts, rappers and NBA ballers, aren't worried about getting day jobs.  You might not think it's fair, but very few employers want the face of their company to be covered in ink, or pierced.

Wait a minute.  Wait a minute.  Wait a minute.  I just saw the light.  I'm wrong and all my critics are right.  Now I honestly believe:

1. The NBA is better than ever, even though the quality of play, attendance and ratings are down.  Families love to take their kids to arenas to look at the nice thugs.  They really do.

2. If you don't like tats, you're out of it, man!  Tats are just like Elvis and the Beatles.  Can't you see that?

3. Having needles stuck into you to create an image of  someone committing suicide is a normal and beautiful thing.  In no way should you infer that someone who does this has any problems with self-esteem.  In fact, if you don't dig it, then you must be bald and lacking in self-esteem yourself!  C'mon, the last thing NBA players want is attention.  You know that.

4. Having a tattoo like the other 90% of NBA players actually shows how unique you are.  Yes, it sounds counter-intuitive, but you'll just have to trust me on this one.

5. If you don't like tattoos you're a hater, but if you leave angry expletive-filled voicemails expressing how much you hate someone for not liking tattoos, then you are not a hater.  Again, just trust me.

6.  Lastly, when you leave comments, and you don't know how to spell, punctuate or capitalize it's actually a sign of great wisdom.  Or how about the sweet gal who used 35 swear words in a 40-word sentence when she called me up and told me how great her tats were, and how stupid I was?  She has a Master's Degree from UCLA!  Well, that's what she said.

Wonderful art on the back of guard Mike Bibby.  All he has to
do to remember his deceased loved ones is crane his neck
while looking over his shoulder in a full-length mirror, or
have someone else take a picture of it, or....oh, c'mon, this
is just stupid!
