Let's not split hairs about this—Chris Rock's savage documentary, "Good Hair" is a winner. Fresh, bold and downright inventive, it finds the revered comic globe-trotting to learn more about the lengths some women--mostly African Americans--go to to maintain a thoroughly modern and often chemically processed ’do. Note the five things that stand out:
Life's a Shag
Rock's articulate, humorous chats with hairdressers and their customers. They prove to be both enligthening and entertaining.
Price Fixe
How many people would fork over at least $1,000, six hours of their time, and pain (hair loss and scalp burns anyone?) to get that weave? Many. Watch how Rock and a chemist experiment with the "hair-relaxing" concoctions. Brutal.
Shave and Save
Who knew so many people cut or shave their hair and donate it either to charity or--this is interesting--buyers interested in scooping it up to use for weaves or wigs. One of the film's more eye-opening sequences takes place in India where Rock interviews Hindu women. Captivating.
Celeb Du Jour
Rock lures in high-profile "hair" figures like Rev. Al Sharpton (nice hair, bud!), Maya Angelou, Raven Symoné, actress Tracie Thoms and music's Salt N' Pepa. The result. Hair-raising.
Punchlines
At the end of the day, it's all about Rock. The comic's intelligent blend of humor and insight is unmatchable this movie season.
