The Washington Post is reporting that Washington, D.C. will be among the first metropolitan areas in the U.S. to receive the Chevrolet Volt when it hits showrooms in late 2010, this according to GM North American President Ed Peper. Washington will join San Francisco as one of two debut areas for the sales launch of General Motor’s first plug-in electric car.
The announcement was made Tuesday during opening day of the Washington Auto Show and continued the Big 3’s push to position advanced technology and fuel-efficient vehicles squarely in front of Washington policymakers. According to Britta Gross, GM's lead on the Volt introduction, the Washington DC and Bay area markets were no brainer's for the Volt intro based on their high average household income, tech- savvy populations and current hybrid vehicle ownership numbers.
The announcement also lays the groundwork for necessary governmental and infrastructure changes to commence, like workplace charging stations and HOV lane access.
