A Washington Post ABC News poll released today showed that 55 percent of Americans overall oppose federal aid to domestic automakers. According to the poll, nearly 75% of Americans believe Ford, GM and Chrysler’s troubles are the result of failed business practices not the economy and that their bankruptcy would do little to worsen an already dire economic climate. 60% of those polled believe it “would be good for the economy if one or more of the companies were forced to restructure under [bankruptcy].”

These poll results come at an inopportune time for the Big Three and flies in the face of a poll conducted by the Peter G. Hart firm firm just last month. In it, 55% of all respondents expressed broad support for loans to the big three, believing a GM, Ford, or Chrysler failure in the next few years could trigger an economic depression.
The Senate defeated a $14 billion bailout last week and the White House is considering tapping the previously approved $700 billion financial services aid package to aassist the auto industry.
