The stars were out in full force last night in New York City for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall, where there were big wins, big performances, and one big upset.
The night started out with a Madonna-introduced tribute to Michael Jackson, the once and future King of Pop. Dancers wearing several of Jackson’s most iconic outfits performed choreographed numbers to “Thriller,” “Bad,” and “Smooth Criminal” as clips of the music videos showed in the background. Then Janet Jackson came out and did a great performance of “Scream.” Her brother Jermaine Jackson, wearing a Michaelesque black military jacket, cheered from the audience.
Next, host Russell Brand emerged from below the stage as Katy Perry and Joe Perry performed the Queen hit “We Will Rock You.” In his opening monologue Brand described himself as a cross between two other famous Brits, Robert Pattinson and Daniel Radcliffe, saying that he was “a blood drinking dreamboat with a sac of magic and a wand.”

Always the funnyman, Brand looked like he was having a good time with his hosting duties, wearing a tight, blue-grey suit with a matching vest. Brand pulled his look together with a black top hat and a killer pair of boots, earning himself some style cred for the evening.
Others in the well-dressed category include P. Diddy, who wore a black suit with white lining on the lapels and a white tie; Ne-Yo, who wore black jeans, shirt, and vest with a fedora; Chace Crawford, who looked effortlessly stylish; and Taylor Lautnor, who wore a drak grey Calvin Klein suit with a black shirt.
Under the worst-dressed category we have Robert Pattinson, who didn’t look very well-put together in his blue blazer, black pants and cream colored shirt; Adam Brody, who announced Green Day’s performance with Megan Fox while wearing possibly the most boring suit ever; and Kanye West.
Kanye West caused quite a stir at the VMAs last night when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for the Best Female Video award (the first award handed out of the night), grabbing the mic from Swift and proclaiming that Beyoncé had one of the greatest videos of all time.
Not only was Kanye (once again) acting like a fool, but he looked like one too. Wearing baggy jeans and a shirt that appeared to be made out of a hefty bag, Kanye was a downright mess—not to mention the fact that he was toting around his own personal bottle of Hennessey. No one likes a stupid, sloppy drunk, Kanye!
Other than that, the Video Music Awards were quite good this year, with exceptional performances from Jay-Z and Muse (and, not to forget the ladies, there were really awesome performances from Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Pink, and Lady Gaga as well). Tune in next year to see what kind of wackiness the VMAs will bring.
