To kick off the new weekly feature on male celebrity style, I would like to highlight an unlikely candidate: Sacha Baron Cohen.
In 2006, Cohen graced moviegoers with Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Cohen played Borat Sagdiyev, a culturally-naïve Kazakhstani TV personality who travels to America with a camera crew. Along the way, Borat meets a colorful cast of characters, including drunk college guys, an etiquette coach, a prostitute, and Pamela Anderson. The film was both hilarious and disturbing, earning Cohen a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedic performance and an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.
A few years (and a few lawsuits) later, Cohen is back with his film Bruno. In his new movie, Cohen plays a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter named Bruno, a character he previously played on Da Ali G Show. While some are concerned that the movie will promote gay stereotypes, others are saying that it is all in good fun. Arguments aside, the trailer for the film looks hilarious.
Almost as hilarious as the trailer is the promotional frenzy for the film. Cohen has shown up to all of the movie’s premieres in character so far, wearing the most outlandish outfits. From his Don Quixote-inspired armored booty-shorts and gauntlet in Sydney to his anatomically correct knit bodysuit in Berlin, Cohen is bringing it. You can’t help but laugh at his audacity. And that is why he is the first ever star style spotlight. Cohen is comfortable with himself and his clothes, and he is not afraid to look ridiculous. And when he’s not dressed like one of his characters, he cleans up pretty well.
Take a page out of Cohen’s book and don’t be afraid to take risks and be a little ridiculous. It keeps things fun, and it’ll make you feel good too.
Catch Bruno in theaters this Friday, July 10th.
