Need an idea on where to take yourself, family, and friends for an extended weekend? How about a World Heritage Site where you can interact with America's history: Grand Canyon National Park.
The Smithsonian sent me their weekend trip itinerary for next summer (June 18-21, 2010), and I've tweaked it for last minute Thanksgiving travelers:
Wed, November 25th — New Orleans to Las Vegas
Arrive in Las Vegas via my favorite, Delta Airlines, or for more options, Kayak.com to book an overnight at The Embassy Suites (a non-casino hotel) with all two-room suites including flat-screen TVs, a microwave, and refrigerator. Located just one mile from the Strip, the area's attractions are easily accessible from the hotel. The hotel offers a fitness center, a heated outdoor pool and whirlpools, and complimentary cook-to-order breakfast buffet. Drive or book a bus to Grand Canyon.
Thursday, November 26th -- Arrive Bar 10 Ranch, Grand Canyon
Bar 10 Ranch offers a variety of accommodations. Couples have the possibility of sleeping in converted Conestoga wagons containing double mattresses, depending on availability. There are also five dormitory-style rooms for families or singles. Each room at the lodge sleeps up to six people in bunk beds. Bathrooms and showers are located down the hall and are shared. Travelers also have the option of sleeping under the stars on the ranch's deck. No single rooms are available.
In addition to the ranch activities included in your package, such as skeet shooting and horseback riding, the Bar 10 Ranch also has optional All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) rides available, for an additional cost per person. The 1 1/2 hour ride goes into Red Canyon and departs the Ranch at 4 p.m. ($63.50) and at 6 p.m. ($70.00). Riders must be 16 years old with a valid driver's license. Advance registration is not required, you can choose this option while at the Ranch. Payment may be made by cash or credit card, 1 night
Friday, November 27th — Colorado River
Take a helicopter tour to the canyon floor and embark onto river rafts. Float down the Colorado River, stopping along the river’s edge for guided hikes to points of natural and archaeological interest. This evening, enjoy the sights and sounds of nature as you camp under the stars.
Camping on the Colorado River
Sleeping bags, sheets, air mattresses, and small pillows are provided, 1 night
Saturday, November 28th — Colorado River and Lake Mead
After breakfast at camp, continue down the river to Separation Canyon. Board a power boat and ride out of the canyon to Lake Mead. Travel back to Las Vegas and freshen up before heading to the airport for late-afternoon departures.
