Racy? Really? (AP/Chris Pizzello)

On tonight's Teen Choice Awards, there were two musical performances that featured one item in common: poles. You probably only heard about one of those performances, though, since it's been buzzing across the internet all day. That's pretty interesting considering that the "racy" performance was actually quite tame compared to the one that actually had dancers working the pole like seasoned veterans at a gentlemen's club, and which got nary a word in the press.

Miley Cyrus sang her new song 'Party in the USA' and although she stood atop an ice cream cart with a pole on it for about one minute, maybe ninety seconds at best, she has been castigated all day for it. Headlines like "Miley Cyrus Gets Raunchy With a Pole at the Teen Choice Awards'" and "Miley Cyrus Works a Stripper Pole for Teen Event" can be found all over the internet. With headlines like that, you'd think that Cyrus was gyrating against that pole while taking her clothes off piece by piece. While that would be worthy of news, the reality is that her dance with the pole was actually rather innocent. Sure, she shimmied down it one time, but appeared to use it mostly to balance herself while being wheeled from one side of the stage to the other.

Compare that to Sean Kingston, singing his current hit 'Fire Burning.' Kingston is only 19, three years older than Cyrus, and he had not one but two poles. He also had two very scantily-clad ladies dancing around those poles with moves that were much more provocative than Cyrus's one shimmy. So why then is only Cyrus getting called out for her inappropriate dancing and for using a pole in her performance, whereas no one is blinking an eye at Kingston's very sexy, very racy stage outing? Double standards, anyone?

Cyrus does have young fans, which leads some critics to say she should know better and that there are children watching. Kingston performed prior to Cyrus, so they had a view of both poles and the kinds of dance moves that were accompanying them. It seems pretty obvious that if either performance was going to leave a negative impression, it would be due to Kingston's dancers rather than Cyrus. If people want to be mad about sexy behavior at the Teen Choice Awards, then look towards someone who actually displayed it.

Compare for yourself. Who had the racier pole dancing, Kingston or Cyrus?
