A 1941 Ralph Waldo Emerson junior high school graduating class photo, which contains a teenaged Norma Jeane Baker, has sold at auction. The back of the photo features a friendly message and signature from Norma Jeane that reads:
To a super and swell friend (date at that) I mean it Bobby! Norma Jeane Baker 3 ’41.
The final selling price? A cool $15,452.
One estimate for the photo was $20,000 but $15,452 is nothing to sneeze at.
Emerson junior high was (and still is) located on the west side of Los Angeles. Marilyn Monroe—then Norma Jeane—attended the school from September 1939 through June 1941 for 8th and 9th grades.
I’m not sure who the mysterious Bobby is but within a year Norma Jeane would walk down the aisle with Jim Dougherty. They were married in June 1942 when Norma Jeane was just 16. She had just completed the 10th grade and, much to her regret, would not return to high school after her marriage.
Congratulations to the happy winner!
