By all accounts, the Dead owned the second annual Rothbury Festival at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan, July 2-5. The six-man band played for nearly four hours on Saturday, July 4, marking their final scheduled appearance for the summer, likely the year, and quite possibly for a few years after that. Fans were treated to lovable nuggets like "Sugar Magnolia," "Friend Of The Devil," "Franklin's Tower," "I Know You Rider" and "Throwing Stones," along with deeper cuts "Loose Lucy," "Unbroken Chain," "Viola Lee Blues," "Morning Dew" and "Sunshine Daydream." The group also tried their hand at Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic," featuring guitarist Warren Haynes on vocals. An encore of “U.S Blues” and Buddy Holly's “Not Fade Away” got a boost from a colorful fireworks show.
At one point during the show, guitarist Bob Weir asked the crowd for "a big round of applause for the guys who thought this country up and did something about it." Although the Dead’s future is up in the air, Phil Lesh told the crowd, “We hope to come back again." Lesh also played with Jackie Greene, part of Lesh’s Phil & Friends revolving door of musicians, for a version of the Dead's "New Minglewood Blues."
