White Oak Lake State Park, about a 4 hour drive from Dallas, located in Bluff City, Arkansas, has proven that their priority is the local fish and game. The only lake I've ever visited that does not allow swimming is strict about its homo sapien activity because the water contains fertilizers for the fish that are farmed here. A woman here caught an 18 pound catfish, as the locals boast. The lake is also very rich in underwater trees which poke up from the water very randomly, posing a threat to swimmers, but which make great habitats for fish. Boating and fishing are welcomed here, which is the best way to observe the white herons and other local birds which also feed on the lake's fish.
Not to worry though, there are plenty of other reasons to visit this Arkansas jewel. Offshore, campers are aplenty as well as RV's. The forest of tall oak trees is reminiscent of scenes painted of far away places. The canopy they provide makes for refreshing walks down the hiking trails in escape from the summer sun. Hiking trails can be guided or self-guided and are color coded by difficulty level. The Beechwood trail, about two miles long, is the best for non-pros. Next is the Coastal Plain Trail, about three miles long. Finally, the Fern Hollow trails is for hiking aficionados. Be careful though, poisonous snakes do live in this forest and have been spotted from time to time. Boat tours are offered during the day and Sunset Cruises at night. Paddleboats, canoes, and bikes can be rented from the Visitor Center for under five dollars. White Oak Lake State Park gives you the chance at family time under the open sky in a truly beautiful and natural place.
