Your photos shouldn't be the only memories that you have of your last vacation. Many times we take so many photos or visit so many sites on a trip that we forget what half of them were. For this reason, keeping a travel journal will help you stay organized with your memories but also preserve them better.
1. Do not make it so much work that it takes away from your enjoyment. The easiest way to do this is to make it simple. Keep a notebook with you. Date the top and put the name of the place you are visiting. You can either write a sentence or two about how you feel beforehand, or save it for how you felt afterward. If this is a family journal, you can even take turns in who journals about the visit.
2. Make sure to do this the day of. Again, some of our iteneraries are so teeming with stops that at the end of the day, we might not remember the name of a small one, especially if the name is foreign to us. We might not remember how to spell the name, or what the name of the funny tour guide was. These are the details that enrich our experiences but get lost in the shuffle.
3. On the ride home, have everyone write a brief (or longer if they want to) entry on what their favorite part of the trip was. These may be unforgettable now, so help them stay that way. For example, you might remember seeing the golden temple, but not how you nearly missed the train to be there and got a ride in the back of a farmer's truck. Friends love to hear about the funny, unexpected moments. This makes your vacation photos more than photos. They tell the background stories that make your trip come to life for those who couldn't share it with you.
