Calling all writers!

Do you have problems motivating yourself to write? Do you have trouble finishing a story or novel you've already started? There is a solution to your woes: NaNoWriMo!

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is the electric cattle prod most writers need to get the juices flowing. One bravado-filled evening, Chris Baty and his zany San Francisco friends decided it wouldn't be hard to write a novel. They banded together and decided they would each write a novel in a month, roughly 50,000 words (think The Great Gatsby). As any struggling writer knows, it's not that easy. But Baty was intrigued by how invigorated he felt by this challenge. And so was born NaNoWriMo.

This month-long challenge (every November) has been going on for over ten years and has been broadened to include aspiring novelists across the globe! Novelists are logging in and racking up word counts across the US, Canada, Central America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia! Individual regions and cities have Municipal Liasons that help facilitate comraderie in local communities as writers plug through the word frenzy.

And because writers have rarely been ranked among any society's "normal people," the ways the local communities inspire creativity among writers are certainly...creative. In Phoenix, the list of writing events include a daytime write-ins, evenings write-ins, and even a Light Rail Write-In on November 14. Writers will board the Light Rail at 19th Ave and Montebello at 10:30am, ride it to the opposite end of the line in Mesa, and ride it back, writing the whole time!

Don't think you have to be a professional novelist or unemployed to tackle NaNoWriMo. Teachers, mechanics, students, stay-at-home moms, lawyers, journalists, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, you name it, have scrounged up whatever free time they have (or don't have) to stamp out a novel.

Are you a Phoenician who is feeling like you're all alone in the writing process? Don't be sad; there are 401 "Wrimos" (people participating in NaNoWriMo) in Phoenix and 46% are first time Wrimos! As of November 7, Phoenix Wrimos have written a collective 1, 713,553 words. Whew!

If you've ever wanted to write a novel or think it's easier than all those writers say it is, sign up for NaNoWriMo today! It's free and loads of fun. Join your region and get that word count going!
