When it comes to sports, these are the true dog days. Other than the occasional puff of smoke from Rockets' central. there isn't much going on.
The Texans are still a few weeks away from camp.
The Rockets are signing Trevor Ariza today, but the big moves we are hoping for have yet to develop.
The Astros? They continue their continued quest for mediocrity.
UH, Rice, Texas, A&M...they are still a month away from serious football practice.
The Dynamo are spending most of the month on the road.
Frankly, the Houston sports junkie doesn't have much to look forward to right now.
Fear not, things will get better. We have a lot to look forward to in the coming months. Here are some predictions for the rest of the year, all guaranteed to come true.
Unless they don't.
1) The Texans will make the playoffs for the first time. All the contract squabbles will be worked out, the team will get off to a fast start and not look back. They will win the AFC South. Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, Mario Williams and Eric Winston all make the Pro Bowl. Gary Kubiak is coach of the year.
2) The University of Houston makes an appearance in the Top 25. The Cougars lose to Oklahoma State, but upset Texas Tech and Mississippi State. They drop one game in conference, but win C-USA and the Liberty Bowl, and Case Keenum becomes a household name. Kevin Sumlin is coach of the year.
3) The Rockets make a huge splash. Jerome Solomon has a great column today; the Rockets' best moves are yet to come, so don't panic. Daryl Morey is GM of the year.
4) The Astros finish .500. Cecil Cooper is not manager of the year.
5) The Dynamo win another title, with Brian Ching scoring the winning goal. Dominic Kinnear is coach of the year.
6) The Rice Owls have another winning record. Even without Chase Clement, James Casey and Jarrett Dillard, the Owls will be competitive. Yes, there will be a drop-off, but coach David Bailiff has built a program that can match up well in C-USA. He finishes second in coach of the year voting behind Sumlin.
7) UT will play for the national championship. The Longhorns will lose one game -- at Oklahoma State -- but they win the Big 12 Championship game. Sam Bradford gets hurt when UT plays OU, and the Longhorns win. But he returns to beat Okie State. There is a three-way tie, the Longhorns benefit this time and Mack Brown -- for once -- doesn't whine.
The Longhorns will face either LSU or USC for the title. Go to the bank now. Brown wins coach of the year.
8) Texas A&M finishes 4-8 again. Mike Sherman's coach of the year bid falls short.
9) Yao Ming surprises everyone and returns in time for the second half of the season, teaming with the Rockets' big, yet-to-be-named off-season acquisition to make a run to the playoffs. But he gets hurt in the first playoff game and they get ousted. Still, right now the playoffs would look pretty good, wouldn't they? Rick Adelman wins...yeah, you get it.
10) Matt Dean will win the main event at the 2010 World Series of poker. He knocks me out in 26th and I never hear the end of it. He also gets to be poker player of the year.
OK, realistically? The top eight could all happen. We need a little luck for 9 and 10. But since we're being optimistic, why not?
So cheer up, Houston fan. Good days are ahead.

Speaking of predictions, Clements golfer Portland Rosen will be a bigger star than at least half the people on this list. A nice idea, but her omission was huge oversight.
