The Texans got a nice home win over the 49ers on Sunday, holding on for a hard fought 24-21 triumph.
It was a game they were supposed to win, and they did what they needed to do. The gut reaction after jumping to a 21-0 lead and having to hold on would be to rip them for not putting an opponent away.
But the way the game played out, the Texans actually did what they needed to do to win a football game. They weren't pretty. They weren't particularly efficient. But they won a game they were supposed to win.
Their main problems remain. They can't get pressure on the quarterback consistently. They can't run the football consistently, and when they do, Steve Slaton can't hang on to the ball.
But they did enough to win a game they were supposed to win.
Coachingwise, there are still serious issues with clock management. The playcalling at the end of the first half was abysmal. They made no real effort to put up points. With a 21-0 lead, they were too content to go to the half ahead.
Not to always use Bill Belichick as the standard, but he would have gone for the throat. The Texans need to learn to do that.
Their timing for those kinds of plays remains off beat. They did get agressive at the end of the game when running the football on third down would have made more sense.
In close games, that can come back to bite you.
In this case, however, it didn't. The Texans are 4-3 with a winnable game looming in Buffalo. They are right where they should be for this time of year.
It might not have been pretty, but it was effective.
