Live by the change, die by the change. That's what the Christie campaign hopes will be the maxim in the New Jersey governor's race this year. Christie has been busy claiming President Barack Obama's successful campaign theme of change for himself, stealing the thunder and blunting the impact on the race of Governor Jon Corzine's highest profile supporter.
Christie has not run from Obama during the campaign, as might be expected. Rather he has embraced Obama's participation in the race, releasing a web video welcoming the president to New Jersey last July and moving in to Obama's old campaign headquarters in Newark. Now, Christie is set to make "change" the focus of his campaign. For his first post-Labor Day major speech, the Christie campaign announced that he will deliver remarks on his vision for New Jersey's future. The speech is titled "Countdown to Change."
President Obama remains personally popular in New Jersey, even if his July visit on Corzine's behalf failed to provide the governor a significant boost in the polls. It may be counterintuitive for Christie to identify with a popular president of the other party. But so long as he remains ahead in the polls, Christie's audience is the famously independent New Jersey electorate. The more of them whose support he can attract, the less opportunity for Corzine to get up off the mat and make the race competitive.
