Zach Galifianakis is eyeing a role as "Humpty Dumpty" in a "Shrek" spinoff film.

This summer's smash-hit comedy "The Hangover" pulled down hundreds of millions of dollars, secured itself a sequel, and made it suddenly very cool to like comedian Zach Galifianakis.  A longtime hero of the Comedy Examiner's Office, Galifianakis has been lining up projects ever since "The Hangover" arrived, and his latest is very unexpected.  Read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers...

Zach Galifianakis can do no wrong as far as we're concerned, but let's say for a moment that such a thing were possible: if it was, then it'd be something like the news that broke on Slash Film today.

The website is reporting that Galifianakis is eyeing a turn as "Humpty Dumpty" in a "Puss in Boots" spin-off from the "Shrek" franchise.  Here's what they're saying:

Because the world can never get enough Shrek, we’ve known for some time that an upcoming spinoff film, Puss in Boots, has been in the works. Now it seems like things are finally moving forward. The increasingly bankable Zach Galifianakis is currently in talks to voice Humpty Dumpty. He’ll be joining Antonio Banderas as the title character, and Salma Hayek as “Kitty”.

Now, back to that "Galifianakis can do no wrong" thing: we stood by Zach through "G-Force", and we'll support his passing interest in "Man-Witch" (the comedy wherein Zach would've played a witch, who was also a man, so you get...oh, forget it), but we're nervous about a "Shrek" spinoff film.  The "Shrek" franchise started strong and has been an awesome example of diminishing creativity as it's gone along.  Must we really be spinning-off from it now?

Oh, and we promised a "bonus video" in the title, didn't we?  Fair enough.  Here's Zach Seth Galifianakis, Zach's twin brother, undergoing an interview for the "Live at The Purple Onion" standup DVD that Zach put out (which, by the way, is absolutely worth searching out and owning if you're a true Galifianakis fanatic):

That said, if there's any reason we'd watch such a film, it'd be for Galifianakis' involvement.  Stay tuned to the Comedy Examiner for more on this situation as it develops, my gentle Examiner readers.  And be sure to sound off in the comments section below as to whether or not you'd like to see this bit of gossip come to pass!  Afterwards, feel free to check out these other recent articles from the Comedy Examiner's Office:

"Fully-grown adults actually offended at "Sesame Street" joke about FOX News (with video)"-- in which we look at the sad case of someone whose sense of humor got shot off in the war.  With Grouch video!

"New "Sherlock Holmes" trailer is even better than the last one! (with video greatness)"-- check out the latest trailer to this Christmas' "Sherlock Holmes" here.  Movie's looking awesome!

"Is Michael Jackson's "This Is It" already getting sequelized?  Find out here! (with video)"-- in which we dispell the rumor-- via parody-- that Michael Jackson's "This Is It" has more of "It" to share with us.

"Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will host this year's Oscars"-- in which we learn the details on the 2010 Oscars: who's hosting, when it's on, and whether or not it'll be unbearably long for the 83rd year in a row.
