I'm a life-long resident of Providence's Hartford neighborhood. Recently, I've seen some interesting things taking place, especially around the Hartford Park area, where some nice wrought iron fences were put up along Hartford Ave. This caught me by surprise, since there were already fences there, and the replacement fence looks like it probably costs substantially more than a simple chain link fence. Providence is facing major fiscal problems, so why are we spending money on new fences in Hartford Park, or anywhere else for that matter?
Well, today I received another surprise when I saw workers constructing beautiful stone walls in Hartford Park, along with some equipment that appears to be preparing various areas for new landscaping. Then, at the corner of Hartford Ave and Bodell St, I see a sign pointing out that all of this work is courtesy of the American Investment and Recovery Act. That $787 billion job creation bill is being used to build stone walls and redesign landscaping. All this in a development that has been marred by vandalism for as long as I can remember.
There is no doubt that people will be put to work putting up the fence, building the stone walls, and redesigning the landscaping. There is also no doubt that these jobs are short-lived. The stimulus bill is a joke. How exactly do stone walls contribute to the long-term health of the economy? I was against the stimulus bill, but I could have understood increased spending on mass transit, roads, bridges, wind turbines, etc. I still wouldn't have agreed with the stimulus bill, but at least it would have sounded rationale and had a long-term impact. Stone walls and wrought iron fences? Sorry, but it seems like nothing but a waste of time and money.
