Starting May 1, you will be able to make an impact on the lives of local shelter pets without making a large investment. Weis Markets grocery stores will help you help the animals.

Paws for Pets, is a month-long, chain-wide program offering customers the opportunity to donate pet food and supplies to local animal shelters.

With the slow economy, we're hearing about the increasing number of pets that are turning up in pet shelters, resulting in an increased need for pet food and pet supplies," said Jonathan Weis , Weis Markets' Vice Chairman.

Weis said his company worked with local pet shelters to compile a list of needed items, including: dog, cat, puppy and kitten food, kitty litter, collars, harnesses and leashes, toys and treats, pet shampoos, etc... A suggested list of items will be available in stores to help customers make selections.

After you purchase the items to donate, you simply place it in a specially marked donation cart near checkout. Each donor will be invited to add a paw print sticker to the store's Paws for Pets Window Poster.

The program begins Friday, May 1 and continues through the end of the month. It will run in all Weis Market stores, including the company's Kings and Mr. Z's stores located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.

So pick up an extra item for the critters.
