The Center for Disease control states , "410 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states." A Virginia manufacturer has been cited as the source of the outbreak.
Peanut butter is causing the outbreak:
The product is distributed [in seven states] to establishments such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, schools, universities, restaurants, delis, cafeterias, and bakeries. It is not sold directly to consumers and is not known to be distributed for retail sale in grocery stores, according to the CDC.
The Peanut Corporation of America is the Suffolk, Virginia manufacturer of the peanut butter. They use a distribution company, King Nut, in Ohio, who has issued the recalls.
"We only distribute in seven states and therefore King Nut peanut butter could not possibly be the source of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella," stated King Nut in their press release.
The Peanut Corporation of America released this statement:
PCA's facility and products are frequently and rigorously tested for salmonella and other microbiological contamination, including hourly sampling during processing and subsequent analysis by an outside, independent laboratory. No salmonella has ever been found in any of PCA's product. PCA is cooperating fully with U.S government agencies and independent laboratories in this investigation.
Check the FDA recall notice and the King Nut notice for more information.
See the CDC website for symptoms of salmonella infection.
