Keeping our pets safe when we are away is a primary concern. What will you do with your pets? There is another alternative to friends, neighbors, or a kennel.
The professional pet sitter might meet your needs. Here are six tips for hiring a sitter and two videos to assist you in your search.
1- You can find a pet sitter in your area by using referrals and by searching a professional organization: Pet Sitters International
2- Look for a pet sitter who is bonded and insured.
3- First, do a phone interview. Have your questions ready about cost, insurance, animal care history, animal specialties, referrals, visit length, and sitter contracts. Ask: “What happens if you are ill and unable to come to my house?” “What happens if my [dog] escapes?”
4- If you are happy with the phone interview, schedule a home interview. This is a good time to observe the sitter’s interaction with your pet. Be sure the sitter is comfortable with your type of pet and administering meds and special diet, if necessary.
5- The paperwork:
Go over the sitter’s contract
Get the sitter’s backup name and references. Call them!
6- If you engage the pet sitter, give all your information, vet numbers, and an emergency back-up for you.
Tips: I know some pet sitters who do not like to have a neighbor/friend fill-in between their visits. It creates liability for them and can create confusion about diet and walks. Don’t let this requirement dissuade you from hiring that particular pet sitter.
