Get up Thanksgiving morning, put the turkey in the oven, the kid in the stroller, the dog on a leash, and head out for a turkey trot.  Yes, even turkey trots can be dog friendly.  Don’t feel like running?  You and Fido may also walk the 5K or as many Ks as you like. 

The popular Turkey Trot for Hunger in D.C benefits SOME (So others might eat).  SOME programs serve more than 800 meals to the hungry and homeless year round.  This 5K fun run and family walk begins near Independence Avenue and follows along Ohio Drive to turn around at Hains Point.

Dog friendly Alexandria is holding the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Miler.  Trotters are asked to bring canned food donations to support ALIVE.  (ALIVE is the largest private safety net for the needy in the city of Alexandria).  Your dog is welcome to accompany you. Several cash awards are given to winners of this race.

Thanksgiving is about community.  Trot out and support your community and take your dog along for the fun.  Perhaps, if you do a little trotting before the big meal you might not lapse into the overindulgence coma this year.
