November is Family Stories Month and family stories run the gamut from hilarious to harrowing.  Family stories about me usually begin with some bedraggled critter I brought home or me knocking over a buffet table or a giant carafe of hot coffee.  I’m still not allowed to do the dishes when the good china is involved.  

Most of us have family stories about childhood pets and pet stories mark important times and memories.  Recently, a friend could not  remember a date, but said, “It was the year we got the cocker spaniel.”   I also know a grown man who gets teary-eyed every time he talks about the German shepherd he had as a kid.  

Family stories are told and retold and we have heard them all many times over.  But have you ever noticed that the laughter is often fresh for an old story?  And how many times after telling family stories do you say: “We should write a book!” As we gather for the holidays, it’s a good time to resurrect the family stories.   And maybe start on that memoir.
