Carriage ride in Old Town  photos by Douglas A Crtchell

Trot along in a donkey cart down Alexandria’s historic streets and take your dog along for the ride.

Old Town is known to be a dog friendly locale, so friendly in fact, I took my dogs to meet with Alexandria’s Mayor William Euille in his office.

I approached the security desk with the dogs and said, “We have an appointment with Mayor Euille,”   The security guard craned her neck over the barrier to get a better view of my leashed friends.

“Is the Mayor expecting all of you?” the security guard asked with a raised eyebrow?

“Yes, my dog is conducting an interview,” I said with a wink.

“I’ll need to announce you,” the guard said. She made a quick call and we were waved through.

Mayor William Euille

A Virginia State Senator stopped us in the hall to give the dogs a full body scratch. Several others were drawn to the scratching session and the noise drew Mayor Euille from his office.

“Alexandria is very pet-friendly,” the mayor said, as he joined the cacaphony. “There are many hotels that take dogs and there is even a restaurant with “Dog Happy Hour,” he added.

“And the Duke Street Dog Park is nearby.  You can also take a carriage ride with Fido.” I said from experience.

His Honor invited us into his chambers where we chatted. He spoke proudly of his pet-friendly city and presented one of the dogs with the “Bone to the City.”

Barkley Square Bakery

Later, we headed to Barkley Square Bakery and Boutique. It might have been my imagination, but I felt as if the dogs were leading the way with their noses toward the bakery.  As we turned the corner, I realized the pups were probably following their noses and ears.  There was a large gathering of fidos outside the bakery and owners were sharing treats from cellophane bags with any dog that approached.

Old Town is indeed pet-friendly.
