Nick Jonas, the youngest of the three brothers who make up Jonas Brothers, was in Washington D.C. speaking to congress about juvenile diabetes. Jonas was 13 when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2005. While testifying, Jonas told Congress what it was like to live with diabetes and urged Congress to find a cure. "I know that the promise of a cure lies only in research," Jonas stated, "I ask that each of you join me in supporting the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program next year so that the researchers can continue their work on a cure for our disease. My life depends on it. All our lives depend on it."
Actress Mary Tyler Moore and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard also testified. Moore is the cchairman of JDRF was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an adult. She has been a strong force in working to educate the public and raising funds for diabetes research.
Leonard spoke at the hearing about his father’s diabetes, "My decision to turn professional was based largely on the desire to help my family cover the costs of my father's care," he stated."Thanks to Congress' support, the advances made through research are bringing us closer to the cure that will allow these children to finally knock out diabetes."
