Not long ago I asked the question: Can social networking save Darby? So many of you responded and I am delighted to report Darby has found a forever home. But, I am not writing about Darby right now (a follow up story will be done). I am writing about a precious dog that has been held captive in northern Ireland for the past 21 months!
Yes, Ireland is over 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) outside of Philadelphia but this is an urgent situation that needs immediate help. You see, this dog's execution date has been set for June 29.
Bruce is a pit bull mix. He is not a biter; he is not violent. In fact he has done nothing wrong. The reason he is being held captive is simply breed specific legislation (BSL).
In 1991 the United Kingdom passed the Dangerous Dogs Act (amended in 1997) making it illegal to own pit bulls there without a specific exemption and mandates the owner must have the dog registered, insured and muzzled in public.
The law is the law and I don't intend to argue BSL at this time (personally, I am totally against it). The fact remains that Bruce is in a drastic situation. He has been held at the Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) and is set to be put down on June 29.
Since Bruce was taken captive he has lost weight, gotten a very large open sore on his muzzle from rubbing against the cage he is kept in as well as an infected tail. I cannot imagine he is not depressed from being ripped from the arms of his family.
Bruce's human family has been unable to obtain insurance on him but they love him so much they want him to be able to live with another family in southern Ireland where apparently the BSL is not in effect.
So, back to the social networking… I am begging anyone who reads this article to do the following:
By doing these things it just may be possible to save Bruce, the innocent pit bull. If you love animals please start spreading the word.
