One more PA puppy mill gone
Act 119, Pennsylvania's amendment to its 1982 puppy mill law which Governor Ed Rendell signed into law in October, has been effective in the closing down of a notorious puppy mill run by Ervin S. Zimmerman. The Humane League of Lancaster County (HLLC) seized 96 dogs from his Ephatra kennel on December 20th last year. The dogs were transported to HLLC and the Humane Society of Berks County (HSBC). After more than a year of appeals Zimmerman's puppy mill operation is finally closed down permanently. Kerry Flanagan, vice president of the Humane League of Lancaster County said "It's a tremendous victory to see a kennel of this magnitude, and this individual who has thumbed his nose at the law for so long, shut down," and added "These dogs' days of misery are finally over."
In a creative way of helping these dogs the HLLC offered a 'half price sale' recently and was successful in adopting out 59 dogs in only three days! Now only a small number of dogs remain at the shelter.
Jane Brown, the shelter's CEO said part of the goal was to find these dogs homes so the shelter could paint the kennels to maintain compliance with state laws. It worked!
The sale continues through January 31st. Puppies under 6 months old cost $87.50,
adult dogs from 7 months to 6 years old cost $60 and senior dogs 7 years and older cost $25. Prices include all vaccinations and microchipping.
Due to Pennsylvania's new law it is expected that more puppy mill operations in the area will be closed down and Brown is quoted as saying "If we continue to have these large volumes of animals come through while we try to rescue dogs in bad breeding situations from bad kennels, we absolutely will consider doing this again."
