Darby O'Callahan is a beautiful, spayed 7-year-old German Shepherd who was recently orphaned. Her human dad died suddenly and unexpectedly while on vacation in Panama. He was a single parent and now Darby needs a new home. Darby lives in the Portland, Oregon area and is currently being boarded at the Townhouse Pet Care Center in Portland. Staff there reports Darby has some aggression issues with other dogs which is why finding Darby a home has become such a challenge.

Yes, we live in the information age and it never fails to impress me just how small our world is getting! Growing up in the 1950s I recall adult dinnertime conversation expressing outrage when the cost of a postage stamp went from four cents all the way up to five… back then, it took about a week just to get a letter delivered four states over.

Now with email, any messages I have can be sent to family around the world in a matter of seconds! That's progress… so why can't Darby find a home? Darby has her own Facebook page and her temporary guardians (nephew and niece-in-law of Darby's human dad) have reached out through Twitter.

Having had a dog-aggressive fur kid once upon a time I understand the concern and frustration it brings. On one hand is a loving and beautiful dog that only wants to love their human and on the other hand is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Put your self in Darby's paws for a minute… She was perfectly happy and content with her pet parent; an only child, yes, but her dad's sudden and unexpected death certainly isn't her fault. She has no other human family to care for her; she has become an orphan. When you are feeling sad, bewildered, abandoned and unsure don't you act out in anger at times? It's part of the grieving process. Don't kid yourself, dogs grieve. They grieve for other dogs but they also grieve for the loss of their human.

So here's my point… anyone who reads this article, please go to your Twitter account and Tweet Darby's story to anyone and everyone. Don't stop there. While you're at it email Darby's story to everyone in your email address book. Viral marketing can be a very positive impetus for change. It only takes a little bit of effort. Darby will thank you… And, if you are a rescue or know of a rescue that may help Darby, email the family at info@shonaliburke.com or visit Darby's Twitter page here.

Responses have been coming in but a forever home has still not been found. A company called Pet Relocation has generously donated transport services to anywhere should a home be found. The Oregon Humane Society has been helpful with references to German Shepherd rescue groups but Darby is still awaiting a home. Come on folks, lets show just how small this global world of ours is! Prove that social networking can save Darby.
