Best Friends is a stellar organization. Located in Angel Canyon where the 'Golden Circle' of majestic national parks comes together (Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell and Bryce Canyon) the Kanab Creek winds its way around the scenery.
Angel Canyon is the home of the Pueblo People, the Anasazis. The rock art seen in the area is unique. So far it is the only known culture that did not depict violence, war, subjugation, or slavery in its rock art. Fitting it should be a sanctuary for homeless, special needs animals.
Best Friends started out not just a 'no kill' shelter but advocated the belief all animals should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and love. To that end, Best Friends has been rehabilitating dogs, cats, horses and many other types of animals in the sprawling 33,000 acre site.
The motto 'A better world through kindness to animals' is the simple philosophy that kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. The Best Friends' campaign 'No More Homeless Pets' started as a vision to place dogs and cats that were considered "unadoptable" into good homes.
Part of the goal was to reduce euthanizing homeless animals through effective spay and neuter programs. Since Best Friends started the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters has fallen from about 15 million per year to approximately 5 million a year. The goal is to make that number a big, fat ZERO!
The sanctuary houses and cares for over 2,000 animals, most of whom have no where else to go. About 75 percent of the animals rescued to the sanctuary are rehabilitated enough to find loving, forever homes and those who are too old or too sick or have a behavioral issue that prevents them from adoption live on the site for the remainder of their natural lives.
As Best Friends grew from it's early inception it has reached out to work with many rescue groups, cities, communities, states and animal advocate groups throughout the country. It does this by education in spay/neuter, foster and adoption programs, disaster relief work and the like. Philadelphia has a section on Best Friends' web site, too. Take a look.
To celebrate the first 25 years of Best Friends' work in the animal advocate field the Animal Media Foundation has recorded a two CD set of music 'Giving Animals a Voice Through Music'. Artists like Emmylou Harris and Cyndi Lauper have leant their talents to celebrate Best Friends' silver anniversary. Have a listen.
And don't forget to order your copy. It is due to be released March 11, 2009 but can be pre-ordered. Proceeds will be donated to Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends is funded entirely by donations so here's a chance to enjoy the beauty and love of animals while giving to those who need it the most – the voiceless among us.
