Do you care about animals?

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is seeking ten million signatures on a petition calling for universal declaration on animal welfare. It is called the "Animals Matter to Me" petition. Currently there are 2.1 million signatures, worldwide with 1.4 million from the United States.

It's simple. This petition is asking if you care about animals. Identifying those who believe animals have rights and deserve humane treatment is a place to start. In an attempt to formulate an international agreement on welfare standards in the 21st century, WSPA's goal is to secure a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare at the United Nations.

The goals of this campaign are to establish the status of animal welfare as an international issue of concern and to:

  1. Provide a basis for animal-welfare legislation in countries where it does not already exist
  2. Encourage governments to improve their national animal-welfare legislation
  3. Recognize the reality of animal welfare as a key factor in humanitarian and environmental policy making
  4. Encourage those industries that use animals to keep their welfare at the forefront of their policies
  5. Improve public awareness of the importance of animal welfare
  6. Inspire positive change in public attitudes toward animals

Recently, Canada's Parliament voted unanimously for a private member's motion in support of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. Will this apply to the Canadian seal hunt? Let's hope so!

"Animals Matter to Me" represents the largest global animal welfare initiative (ever) under one strategic goal - global recognition that animals are sentient beings, capable of feeling pain and suffering. If you agree with this statement please sign the petition now.
