Okay, I'm no George Bernard Shaw when it comes to critiquing theater productions but having seen the Walnut Street Theater's production of "Oliver!" recently I was impressed. Not just with the creativity harnessed in set designs on the small stage but the classic lyrics of such songs as "Food, Glorious Food" and "Where is Love?" bring back pleasant memories of the original 1963 Broadway production.
Last week, Sam Preston was playing the title role and Brandon O'Rourke nailed the Artful Dodger character to a tee but the most impressive actor I saw was Buddy. That's right Buddy, no last name.
Buddy plays the role of Bullseye, a rascal of a dog who, in my humble opinion - stole the show! Buddy's real-life human is James Buchanan of Broomall, PA a dedicated dog owner who rescued Buddy after his previous owner gave him up because he is deaf.
Buchanan has taught Buddy numerous hand signals and he was on the mark throughout the entire performance! Just goes to show what a rescue dog can do! Buddy – go break a leg, boy!
"Oliver!" runs through January 10, 2010. For tickets, call 215-574-3550 or 1-800-982-2787 or go to www.WalnutStreetTheatre.org
