Sharon McDonough, a widow with seven children ranging in age from 18 months to 21 years was arrested November 7 for allegedly torturing and killing upwards of 20 animals. The carcasses were found buried in shallow graves in her back yard of her home in Selden, NY.
Recent reports have surfaced that McDonough, who lost her husband to an automobile accident last year, was forcing her children to assist her in torturing the animals SPCA officials found buried in her back yard.
McDonough's 21 year old son, Douglas called Rescue Ink to enlist their assistance in saving the five animals found alive in the house. Four dogs and one cat were found living in crates malnourished, subjected to sitting in their own urine and feces with no food or water. A hamster and parakeet were also discovered at the property. Rescue Ink called SPCA and the animals have been confiscated and are currently up for adoption.
The SPCA has been getting calls from neighbors of McDonough who, in light of the gruesome discovery believe McDonough has been stealing their pets to inflict her brand of torture and death. Currently McDonough is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty but if any of the remains are determined to be neighborhood pets McDonough could face felony larceny charges. Police are also investigating allegations of child abuse.
