Have you heard the saying "perception is reality?"
Artist Cyrus Mejia believes art is a way to help change perceptions. As a co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, Mejia is well aware of society's negatively stereotyped perception about pit bulls. Best Friends took in 22 of Michael Vick's dogs (known as the Vicktory Dogs) to rehabilitate them for future adoption. Some of them, two sweet girls named Georgia and Halle have already found a forever home.
Mejia, a contemporary artist and committed animal lover has created portraits of all 22 Vicktory dogs; take a look at them here. More recently Mijia has painted twelve extra large sized portraits of pit bulls (49" X 56") with the express intent "to get people to stop and look at the dogs. They're not monsters or vicious killers, they don't start wars or make atom bombs, they're just very sweet dogs."
The debut showing of Mejia's Pits and Perception Collection will take place December 18, 2009 through January 30, 2010 at the Patrick Moore Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah. A second showing will be held at the Community Folk Art Center in Syracuse, New York beginning June 12 through August 14, 2010. Mijia reports he is currently working on setting up a showing of the Pits and Perception Collection in Philadelphia.
"Art can present us with a different view, a new perspective, another way of thinking about things... Pit bulls and other so called 'bully breeds' account for a large percentage of animals being destroyed in shelters every day. This fear-response to their reputation as vicious killers is being driven by the image of Pit Bulls in the media. Dog fighting is a sad reality, but it’s humans who put dogs in a ring to fight. It’s humans who use violence and torture to make these dogs the symbol of their own aggression. The Vicktory Dogs are poster children for this minority of dogs who themselves are victims." ~ Cyrus Mejia
Does the possibility of seeing this outstanding collection strike a chord with you? Go to kickstarter.com and donate today. If his goal of $2,500 in donations is not met by November 30th all donations will be returned. Mijia is past the half way mark and only needs about another one thousand dollars in donations to make the tour a reality.
Take a look at the slideshow of Mijia's work. The paintings are simply awesome and I for one cannot wait to get to see them in person.
